"Banderol" strike on Kharkiv: a driver killed, at least six injured
On the evening of 4 October Russia hit the Industrialnyi district. About ten apartment blocks were damaged, cars and an office building burned; a police officer is among the injured.

What happened
On Sunday evening, 4 October, Russian forces struck Kharkiv’s Industrialnyi district with “Banderol” munitions. Ukrainian media describe the weapon in different ways — as a missile-drone or a cruise missile; according to Mayor Ihor Terekhov, the district was hit twice.
The head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, Oleh Syniehubov, was first to report a strike on an apartment building: “An enemy strike on an apartment building has been recorded in the Industrialnyi district. We are clarifying the details.” Terekhov initially wrote about two dead, but at 23:45 he updated the figures from the city’s Situation Centre: one person killed, six injured, cars and an administrative building on fire, and about ten apartment blocks damaged. A search and rescue operation was under way, Ukrinform and Interfax-Ukraine reported.
The dead and the injured
According to a Suspilne correspondent, the person killed was the driver of a passenger car that was passing on the road when a Banderol hit nearby (as cited by hromadske). Ukrainska Pravda reported that the man was in the car with a woman and a Spitz dog. The woman survived and is in intensive care. The dog was pulled out of the car and handed over to the city’s animal care centre; according to Bohdan Hladkykh, director of the city’s emergency department, it appears unhurt but is in shock.
Later, speaking to Suspilne Kharkiv, Terekhov gave a different number of injured: “There were hits by three Banderols, preliminarily near residential buildings,” he said, adding that eight people were hurt, one of them in very serious condition. Casualty figures differ between reports, so the final numbers may change.
Viktor Zabashta, head of the regional emergency medical centre, quoted by Ukrainska Pravda, said some of the injured were in serious condition and three had been hospitalised. A police officer is among the injured.
Damage
According to the mayor, windows were blown out and roofs smashed in five high-rise residential buildings. Municipal services and the State Emergency Service were working at the scene. The city’s Situation Centre had earlier recorded damage to about ten apartment blocks and a fire in an administrative building.
Wider context
Kharkiv lies close to the Russian border and is regularly targeted by drones, guided aerial bombs and missiles. The attack came in a week when Russia stepped up strikes on civilian and energy infrastructure across the country. The same evening, Ukrinform reported that a man was wounded in a drone attack in the Kherson region.
What residents should know
During an air-raid alert, stay in a shelter or at least two walls away from the street, keep away from windows and do not return to a strike site while rescuers are working: repeat strikes on the same area happen, as they did this time. Official updates on the aftermath and help for victims are published by the city council and the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration.
The SBU’s request
After attacks in several cities, the SBU again urged Ukrainians not to film or share photos and videos of enemy strikes, air defence operations or hits on critical infrastructure. “These recordings may be used not only by Russian propagandists, but also by Russian military personnel who monitor and analyse such materials in order to adjust subsequent strikes,” the service said (via Ukrinform). Depending on the circumstances, this may be classified under Article 114-2 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code.
Why it matters
Every such strike means civilians killed and injured, homes damaged ahead of winter and emergency crews working through the night. Discrepancies in early figures are common in the first hours after an attack, so the latest statements from the city authorities and the regional administration are the best guide.
