What applies today

On Thursday, 8 October, some regions of Ukraine are again forced to limit electricity consumption, the national grid operator Ukrenergo said. Throughout the day, from 00:00 to 23:59, capacity limitation schedules apply to industry and business, as well as hourly outage schedules for all categories of consumers of 0.5 to 1.5 queues.

The reason is the consequences of Russian missile and drone attacks on energy facilities. Ukrenergo warns that because of the shelling the situation in the grid may change, so it advises following announcements from the distribution system operators – the regional oblenergo companies – in each region. Consumers are asked to use electricity sparingly.

How the grid got through 7 October

During the massive attack on the night of 7 October, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky, Russia used about 70 missiles and Shahed drones, and energy was one of the key targets. By the morning Ukrenergo reported new outages in Poltava, Chernihiv, Kharkiv, Vinnytsia and Kherson regions. Where security conditions allowed, repair crews immediately started emergency restoration work.

That morning electricity consumption was 4.3% lower than a day earlier. Ukrenergo attributed this to clear weather in most regions and to outage schedules in some areas. The operator advised shifting the use of powerful appliances to the hours when industrial solar power plants work most efficiently – from 10:00 to 16:00.

In the evening of 7 October the situation worsened: because of the consequences of the shelling, emergency outages were introduced in some regions. In such cases previously published schedules do not apply, and emergency outages are lifted only after the grid stabilises.

Kyiv: water, transport and a return to schedules

Emergency outages were applied in the capital and the surrounding region on the evening of 7 October. As Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported, problems with the power supply partly cut electricity to water pumping stations, causing water supply disruptions on Kyiv’s right bank. The city administration explained that electric transport was temporarily halted because there was no voltage in the overhead lines; trolleybuses and trams kept running in Obolon and Vynohradar. The funicular also stopped.

Late in the evening DTEK Kyiv Electric Networks said the emergency outages had been cancelled and the city was returning to stabilisation schedules. Energy workers ask people to use electricity sparingly so as not to overload the grid.

Help with equipment

Preparations for winter continue at the same time. According to the Energy Ministry, since the start of 2026 international partners have handed Ukraine 4,807 units of energy equipment – generators, transformers, modular boiler houses, cogeneration units and boilers. Another 685 generators, 269 transformers and 123 other units are expected. Over the same period the ministry’s hubs have sent 711 shipments to the regions, including 3,349 generators and 270 transformers.

What consumers should do

Current queues and outage hours for a specific address should be checked on the websites and channels of the local oblenergo – they publish schedules for individual towns and villages. If emergency outages are announced, earlier schedules are temporarily suspended.
