Strike on Dnipro railway station

At around 11:00 on 29 October Russia sent four jet-powered attack drones towards Dnipropetrovsk region. According to Ukraine’s Air Force, three were shot down, but one hit a platform at Dnipro’s main railway station where passengers were waiting for the suburban train No. 866 from Dnipro to Zaporizhzhia. Regional authorities said 14 people were killed and 14 injured, six of them critically, including an 11-year-old boy. Doctors had to amputate both legs of a 40-year-old man.

The Air Force published photos of jet-drone debris found on the platform to rebut false claims about the cause of the blast. In his evening address President Volodymyr Zelensky said people had simply been “waiting for a train, an ordinary Dnipro–Zaporizhzhia route,” and called the attack a demonstration of Russian cruelty.

What the railway says

Ukrzaliznytsia said the air-raid alert was issued more than ten minutes before the strike and evacuation announcements were made at the station, but many people stayed near the train. The company will review safety protocols at stations. Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi, quoted by DW, said Russia is “deliberately hunting civilians.” The UN humanitarian coordinator in Ukraine, Matthias Schmale, said train journeys “must never end in death and devastation.” UN figures show attacks on the railway rising from 1,206 in 2025 to about 1,700 so far this year.

Chernihiv and Kremenchuk

On the same day an attack drone hit the centre of Chernihiv. Two 15-year-old lyceum students, Yana and Maria, were killed and more than 25 people injured, among them a 10-month-old baby. In Kremenchuk a drone struck a residential area: three people died and 32 were wounded, including six children. Apartment blocks, private homes and a boarding school were damaged.

Dnipro, Poltava region and Chernihiv declared 30 October a day of mourning. In Chernihiv it honours everyone killed in Russian attacks on the city between 21 and 29 October. The president also noted that Russian strikes hit Donetsk, Kharkiv, Chernihiv and Sumy regions throughout the day.

Evening and night: Dnipro, Kyiv, Kremenchuk district

In the evening Russia attacked Dnipro again, hitting a vocational school dormitory; two girls aged 15 and 16 were treated for acute stress. In total the region was attacked almost 40 times during the day. Education Minister Andrii Butenko called it “another act of Russian terror against Ukrainian education.”

At about 23:15 Kyiv came under ballistic missile attack. Warehouses were hit in Darnytskyi district, while missile debris fell near a residential complex in Dniprovskyi district, damaging a building and cars. The Kyiv city military administration reported one person killed. Overnight more than 350,000 customers in Dnipro and nearby communities lost power, and in the morning an industrial facility in Kremenchuk district was attacked. Ukrenergo said scheduled outages would apply in several regions on Friday.

What next

Zelensky said the answer must be more pressure on Russia and more air defence, above all against ballistic missiles. European leaders, including European Council President António Costa, condemned the strikes on civilians. Official totals for the overnight attack on 30 October had not been published at the time of writing.
